About TBI MO

The University of Missouri's Great Plains Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program (RCEP) developed the TBI MO.org website as part of the Missouri TBI Demonstration Project in 1997. The demonstration project coordinated several TBI support and outreach programs under a three-year grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services. It was a collaborative effort of the Missouri Division of Maternal, Child, and Family Health, The Missouri Head Injury Advisory Council, The Brain Injury Association of Missouri, and the Great Plains RCEP. The project was officially housed in the Missouri Division of Maternal, Child, and Family Health, but TBI MO.org at the University of Missouri acted as a central, coordinating resource.

When the grant ended in 2001, several of the projects continued under follow-up grants, including the Support Partner Program (connecting trained volunteers with families of individuals with newly acquired TBI) and the TBI Leadership Academy (building collaboration skills among the various people and agencies that provide services to people with TBI). TBI MO continues as an un-funded project under the Great Planes RCEP, part of the RCEP's service to the vocational rehabilitation community and disability community in general.

During the initial 3-year grant, the Missouri TBI Demonstration Project's activities included:

  • Development of a statewide Support Partner Program to provide support and guidance to families of individuals with TBI at the time of hospitalization
  • Creation of the TBI MO website as a central coordinating resource for the Project
  • Hosting 5 regional Leadership Academies, attended by nearly 300 people from various service agencies and designed to improve networking, planning, and knowledge of TBI-specific issues.
  • Updating and circulating existing TBI reference material, including brochures, workbooks, calendars, and resource lists.
  • Development of outcome evaluation materials to give TBI service coordinators feedback on TBI services.

The TBI MO site continues to provide

  • The brochures and workbooks from the Demonstration Project, including the Missouri Head Injury Guide and a workbook on Employability of Persons with TBI.
  • The popular and innovative Ask Kathy M. resource

The TBI MO site no longer contains a list of Support Partners, a current calendar of Missouri TBI activities, or descriptions of past Leadership Academies.

Great Plains RCEP provides continuing education, training, and technical support for vocational rehabilitation counselors and independent living centers in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas (formerly RSA Region 7). Each of the 10 RSA regions has an RCEP (pronounced "ARE-sep") to provide continuing education services to the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) counselors and agencies in that region. These RCEPs are funded by RSA as part of its support for state VR agencies. RCEP7 is located at the University of Missouri, Columbia, within the School of Health Professions, and serves the states of Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas. We provide in-person training on the latest techniques in VR, refresher courses on aspects of disabilities and rehabilitation services, and support materials for others conducting similar trainings. We also host conferences on VR topics and administer a variety of other grant-funded service projects related to VR
